The Centre for Human Rights of the Faculty of Law
of the University of Pretoria, is one of the most active human rights
institutions on the African continent. The primary focus area of the
Centre is human rights law in Africa. Highlights in its history since
the Centre was established in 1986 include the involvement of members
of the Centre in the writing of the South African Constitution and Bill
of Rights, and the contribution the Centre has made to legal education
in respect of human rights on the continent through its academic programmes
and research outputs. Members of the Centre have served as consultants
on human rights issues to a range of institutions, including the Organisation
of African Unity/African Union, NEPAD, the OHCHR and the South African
Human Rights Commission.

The University of Pretoria (UP) established the Centre for the Study
of AIDS (CSA) in 1999 to 'mainstream' HIV/AIDS through all aspects
of University’s core business activities. Its mission was to
understand the complexities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa
and to develop effective ways of ensuring that all the students and
staff of the University are prepared both professionally and personally
to deal with HIV and AIDS as it unfolds in South African society.
Since that time, the CSA has continued to develop and expand its innovative
training, educational, counselling and research programmes, as well
as providing intellectual leadership and consultancy services off
campus to government and the private and non-governmental organisation
(NGO) sectors.

Inaugurated in 1997, the Centre for the Study of
Globalisation and Regionalisation (CSGR) at the University of Warwick
is the largest academic centre in Europe dealing with this subject area.
The research agenda of CSGR highlights issues of the definition, measurement,
impacts, and policy implications of globalisation and regionalisation.
More specifically, much of the Centre’s research concentrates
on questions such as international financial crises, multijurisdictional
tax competition, the development of global and regional governance institutions,
social policy issues in globalisation, social movement resistance and
other civil society activities regarding globalisation, and the implications
of globalisation for international security. CSGR research spans all
regions of the world, as well as relations between them.

The Transnational Institute was founded in 1974
as a worldwide fellowship of committed scholar-activists. It was one
