Building on the on-going work of the Globalism Institute, the Sources of Insecurity Network will both organise and contribute
to a range of conferences, forums,
seminars and master-classes. These are intended to meet the
needs of the network members and provide outreach
to government agencies, NGOs and individuals. An annual conference bringing
together all members
of the network will be the keystone activity.
- Major national-international conferences. Right
at the centre of the network’s activities,
and crucial to developing its strength, will be
an annual conference. International keynote speakers and delegates, as
well as national and local academics, practitioners
and interested lay persons, will be invited to
an open and inclusive conference on the overarching
theme of ‘Sources of Local, National, Regional
and Global Insecurity’. Particular attention
will be given to bringing scholars and practitioners
from the ‘South’ to Australia. This
annual conference will also be the occasion for
the members of the network to meet and discuss the directions of the network.
Most immediately, members of the network have resolved
to collaborate in the organisation of two major international conferences,
dedicated to the themes of the network, as part of the developing
strength of the current network.
- ‘
New Security Agendas: Australian and
European Perspectives’ conference, was held at the Menzies Centre King’s College,
London, July 2004
- ‘Pathways to Reconciliation and Global
Human Rights’ conference, was held Sarajevo, August 16-19,
2005. It was organised by the Global Reconciliation
Network, Globalization Studies Network
in association with Sources of Insecurity
Network, University of Sarajevo, Embassy of Bosnia
and Herzegovina, Canberra and International Commission
on Missing Persons. More information and papers from the conference are available in both English and Bosnian on the pages linked above.
In addition to our annual conference series, theme-based international-national
conferences will be organised by teams from within the network. For
example, the Globalism Institute in collaboration with Common Ground
Conferences already has significant experience in organising major
international conferences in Honolulu, Rhodes, London and Penang in
2003. In 2004 conferences have been held in London, Prato, Beijing and
Havana. Each of these conferences— some more than others—lend
themselves to incorporating themes from the Sources of Insecurity
network. Further, as a foundation member of the Global Studies Network—a
new worldwide association that links programmes of research, education
and public policy regarding globalisation—the convenor of the
Sources of Insecurity network was part of the organising group for
the following conferences:
- The Meaning of Globalization? Confusions, Conjectures,
Confirmations, 18-21 August 2004, Inaugural Conference
of the Globalization Studies Network, Centre for
the Study of Globalization and Regionalization
(CSGR), University of Warwick, UK
- Globalization: Overcoming Exclusion, Strengthening Inclusion
29-31 August 2005
Dakar, Senegal
- and will shortly attend the GSN Conference in Kuala Lumpur (August 2006)
This has provided an invaluable opportunity to
extend the reach and connections of the Sources
of Insecurity network. |
